Sinestro was on Oa during the rampage of Legion. He was one of the many Green Lanterns who sought to defend the Guardians from death at the hands of their enemy. The aftermath of the battle with Legion left seven Green Lanterns dead, and only one, Hal Jordan of Earth, to replace the loss. Kilowog was chosen by the Guardians to seek out new recruits. There was still a need for a trainer for Hal Jordan, so the Guardians assigned Sinestro to the task. Sinestro travelled to Earth to begin Jordan's training. He found the new Green Lantern in prison, serving a ninety day sentence for a DWI incident which occurred prior to Jordan's induction into the Corps. The conditions appalled the Korugarian. Sinestro believed his training duties would be harder than he had imagined.Jordan's life was divided between his training with Sinestro and his time in prison. Although he was exhausted by this dual life, Jordan grew in his capabilities as a Green Lantern. Still, Sinestro felt frustration at his young charge. Sinestro believed the Guardians had recognized his superiority by assigning Jordan to him. He had tried to mold Jordan in his own image, even by altering his costume. After Korugar failed to respond to three of Sinestro's periodic message beacons, he decided to take Jordan to investigate. The streets were deserted, the parades and the orchestra were gone. The two Green Lanterns were soon under attack by Korugarians armed with Khundish weapons. Sinestro believed his people were under some form of mind control. He believed groups of individual sentients tended to disorder and chaos. Sinestro planned to wipe away the chaos and start over. The people would be broken and tamed. Jordan stopped Sinestro's rampage, trying to reason with him. He had told Sinestro he had called in other Green Lanterns as reinforcements. This further infuriated Sinestro, who lashed out at Jordan. He believed the Guardians themselves did not understand order. Jordan was an example of this lack of control. It was necessary to destroy that which could not be controlled. To this end he would kill Jordan. Sinestro let his guard down for an instant, allowing Jordan to get the upper hand. He managed to get control of himself and convinced Jordan that the incident on Korugar was a misunderstanding. His people had been turned against him, that was the only explanation. Sinestro would have to hide until the truth came out. Jordan would also be blamed for the problems on Korugar. They escaped into deep space. Sinestro was put on trial for his lawlessness. He saw the Guardians had succumbed to chaos. Sinestro believed the Corps had turned against him, he swore to become the bringer of chaos. With a burst of emerald energy, Sinestro dissolved into nothingness, crossing the gateway between universes. The Guardians needed a new Green Lantern for Space Sector 1417. Tomar-Re recommended Katma Tui for the task. The trial was adjourned.Sinestro would escape from the emerald capsule by way of a spare yellow power ring created for him by the Qwardians. A short while later, he developed a mind control device which he used on Hal Jordan. The Green Lantern of Earth was compelled to act in manners violating the rules of the corps. Jordan was tried by his fellow Green Lanterns, and although they would not punish him, Jordan demanded to be dismissed from the Corps and banishment to Qward. Despite their confusion regarding their compatriot's strange request, his fellow Green Lanterns complied with his wishes. | |
