Justice Society of America Gets News Storyline And Writers

JSAWith the release of this week’s Justice Society of America # 29, DC Comics welcomes its first new regular writing team in almost ten years. Green Lantern writer Geoff Johns recently ended his long tenure on the series, having written or co-written most of the previous series 87 issues as well as the first 26 issues of the current volume.

The new writing team of Bill Willingham and Matthew Sturges are no strangers to DC. Willingham created Fables, the popular series about fairy tale characters living in New York, for DC’s Vertigo line of comics for mature readers. Sturges has co-written Fables spin-off, Jack of Fables, with Willingham, and is also the writer f the Blue Beetle co-feature currently running in DC’s Booster Gold series. The new artist on the series is Jesus Merino, who is most known as an inker.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Justice Society series, it stars the DC Universe’s original super hero team. Brought together by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1940’s, they protected the United States from the bad guys while the soldiers were overseas during WWII. Three of them, the original Flash, Green Lantern, and Wildcat, have survived to this day. The current JSA is made up of “legacy” heroes who have adopted the identities of their dead or retired predecessors.

In Justice Society of America #29, a mysterious black egg appears at the JSA headquarters in New York. Mr. Terrific, the team’s resident super-genius, is left alone with the egg when the rest of the team is called away to handle a hostage situation. The issue also brings two new members to the team, the Robin-esque All-American Kid and the illusion-casting King Chimera. There are a couple of life-threatening twists by issue’s end, guaranteeing a return for the next installment.

The series also gained momentum for its new direction this past weekend, where a second ongoing JSA series was announced at San Diego Comic Con. Titled JSA All-Stars, it will be written by Sturges, who will leave the regular book to Willingham and Merino. Joining Sturges will be artist Freddie Williams. The two are currently wrapping up Final Crisis Aftermath: Run for DC. JSA All-Stars, scheduled for later this year, will feature the younger members of the JSA, who split off from the “old guard” to go in their own direction. Speculation has already begun as to what circumstances will prompt this split, and how the characters’ relationships will be affected.
