AMONG superhero fans, a favorite to play Green Lantern has been Nathan Fillion, who was apparently ruled out as too old for the role. Fellow Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds, who earned his superhero stripes as Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, recently landed the part of the DC Comics hero in the Warner Bros movie. The film will tell of hotshot pilot Hal Jordan who finds a ring with incredible powers when a dying alien crashes on earth.

Fillion, 38, best known as Caleb in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Captain Malcolm Reynolds in Firefly and its film spin-off Serenity, did make an entry into the superhero genre when he voiced Steve Trevor in this year's Wonder Woman animated movie.

He was also the superhuman Captain Hammer (pictured) in Joss Whedon's online musical Dr Horrible's Sing-Along-Blog.

{pgomakase css="amazon"}He was so popular a suggestion for Green Lantern that he was featured in a fan-made trailer spliced together from different movies and TV shows.

Fillion told MTV: "A friend of mine, P.J., introduced me to this fan trailer, a fan-made trailer of me as the Green Lantern, which tickled me to no end. It was actually really incredibly well done."

And he's fully supportive of the Warner Bros casting decision, saying: "The fact is, Ryan Reynolds has been chosen for Green Lantern and I can't think of anyone better.

"He's got the look, he's got the talent, he's got the chops, he's got the build - the abs, he's got superhero written all over him."

He explained: "I'm a little more like [a] sidekick, I'm a little more comic relief, whereas I know Ryan is going to handle [the role] beautifully.

"Ryan knows exactly what he's doing and having worked with him for over two years, I know how he handles himself, I know how he attacks things and I'm a big fan.

"I just went and saw The Proposal and I just love him so much. He does really, really good work. ... We've actually exchanged a couple of e-mails just recently, just yakking about it. I'm very excited for him."

Green Lantern is released on June 17, 2011.
