DC Comics Flying To The Top Of Movies

DC ComicsThere is little point denying that the current comic book movie trend tends to favor Marvel Comics. Overwhelming ly so. Since the beginnings of the 21st century comic book Hollywood boom, which often cites the 2000 film X-Men as its inaugural success, most of the successful superhero films have been denizens of the Marvel Comics continuity, including the X-Men trilogy and its released and upcoming spin-offs Wolverine, Magneto, Deadpool, Gambit, and X-Men:First Class; the Spider-Man franchise with two additional installments in pre-production; and Iron Man and its recently wrapped sequel.

Even lesser successful superhero films such as the Fantastic Four duology, Daredevil and Elektra, and the R-rated Punisher and Punisher:War Zone, all have one thing in common: all hail from the annals of Marvel Comics, and the showcase shows no signs of stopping yet. In fact, several past, current  and upcoming Marvel Comics film projects such as Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger, all appear to be weaving together a complex and unfied narrative, with characters such as Samuel L. Jackson's Colonel Nick Fury and Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark/Iron Man appearing in multiple movies. This sharing effort is laying the foundations for the upcoming epic film The Avengers, which will feature many major Marvel Comics icons such as Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, Nick Fury and possibly even the Hulk, fighting together against common foes. For this comic book movie enthusiast, there is the hope some X-Men heroes like Beast, who have at times been Avengers, may also grace us with an appearance.

Nevertheless, while Marvel Comics has been unbelievably productive in recent memory, the company's most distinguished competition, DC Comics, has to date in this decade only released a mere handful of films: Superman Returns starring Brandon Routh, the much anticipated and critically admired follow-up/homage to the Christopher Reeve franchise of the 70s and 80s; and Christopher Nolan's awe-inspring and Oscar-winning Batman franchise of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight; the films star Christian Bale as the Caped Crusader and the latter features the late Heath Ledger in his final, Academy Award winning performance as the Joker.

Although these films are in of themselves quite notable, even stellar in their performances, the fact remains that DC Comics's  completed films resume at present could fit on a page, while Marvel's could fill a small movie script. And yet, the winds of change may be about to blow in DC's favor, bringing with them quite a few new scripts. Confirmed upcoming projects for DC are:

Green Lantern, with the film's Hal Jordan portrayed by Ryan Reynolds, who also performs double comic duty with Marvel's upcoming spin-off Deadpool

Jonah Hex, a late 19th Century disfigured ex-Confederate Solider. The antihero of the same name will be played by Josh Brolin, and also features John Malkovich and Megan Fox

The Losers, a team from DC Comics' imprint Vertigo Comics, which stars Chris Evans, Zoe Saldana, and Jeffery Dean Morgan

Rumoured upcoming film projects include:

And Aquaman project with Leonardo DiCaprio as producer

An Adam Strange project

A movie centered on Green Arrow, a character familiar to fans of the CW's Smallville

A sequel to the Keanu Reeves film Constantine

The long-awaited Shazam! film, most likely featuring the magical hero Captain Marvel

The Flash, produced by Geoff Jones with a script by Dan Mazeau

A Bizarro Superman film woth ties to a leaked script by David Howard and Robert Gordon

Various creative projects by Grant Morrison and Marv Wolfman

Of course, there are a few names notably absent from the confirmed and rumor piles: (the real) Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and the Justice League. The first three names speak for themselves; for those unaware, the Justice League is DC Comic's answer to the Avengers and arguably to a lesser extent the X-Men: it is a team of the DC Universe's greatest superheroes, often led by the DC "Trinity" of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. A whole series of articles could be written on the subject of those three heroes current film woes, with Wonder Woman facing creative limbo, Superman facing legal difficulty, and Batman facing the worst after-success question: "Where do we go from here?" Suffice it to say, although DC Comics'  star players may be on the bench for the forseeable future, its key lineup finally appears to be, well, lining up, and ready to contend on equal terms with Marvel Comics.
