DC Comics And EA Games To Make 'Dante's Inferno'

Dantes InfernoComic book adaptations of video game properties are nothing new. But an epic poem turned video game turned comic? That’s a bit further of a departure from the source material. Still, EA and DC/WildStorm are out to prove that they have what it takes to translate Dante’s Inferno to another new medium.

The comic will run as a mini-series and is set to debut at Comic-Con. While there Visceral Games and Starz Media will also be showing off the first trailer for the “Dante’s Inferno” animated feature, which is slated to release the same day as the game. Talk about covering all the marketing bases. But after Dead Space, the subsequent Dead Space Extraction and the corresponding comic, we can’t say this surprises us. Evidently it’s part of EA’s attempt to tell “Dante’s epic story from a fresh, contemporary perspective and further expose the classic to an ever wider pop culture audience.” A special preview edition of the comic will be given away at SDCC, both at the EA and DC Comics booth, #5213 and #1915, respectively.

If you need to see the talent roster before getting excited about the endeavor, the comic will be illustrated by Diego Latorre of The Incredible Hulk, with Christos Gage of X-men/Spider-man and Wildcats as the scribe.

“When Christos and I saw the early gameplay demo of the game, our jaws just hit the floor,” said Hank Kanalz, Vice President and General Manager, WildStorm. “The nature of this game, as well as the original work, inspired WildStorm to take a unique approach in the creative. Diego Latorre’s art is outstanding and atypical for a game-based comic. EA has really set the bar high, and we strive to achieve or surpass the mark with this book.”

The comic will hit shelves December of 2009 and run six issues. As for the game itself, you can expect a visit to the underworld in 2010.
