"Iron Man 2" exploded into North American theaters with an estimated $7.5 million from its 12:01 a.m. Friday launch. The sequel to the highly successful 'Iron Man' was shown on over 2,500 screens during the witching hours of Thursday. Hundreds of venues sold out in advance of the midnight performances, with online-ticketing services Fandango and MovieTickets also reporting sellouts in many locations for various other weekend show times.

'Iron Man 2' is not expected to beat any records but in todays economy a solid performance would be considered a win and is widely expected to ring up $140 million or more through Sunday. Warner Bros. "The Dark Knight" posted the biggest domestic opening with its $158.4 million debut in July 2008. 'Iron Man 2' will mark Disneys first Marvel movie release since acquiring the company for over 4 billion dollars earlier this year.
