Making Money With American Heroes Overseas

Captain AmericaWith the economy weak and DVD revenues down, the international box office is critical to studio coffers. So how American can real American heroes dare to be? It's a question Paramount faced when it developed G. I. Joe: Rise of Cobra (in theatres Friday), based on the Reaganera toy and comics franchise. And it's one next confronting the Marvel factory as it preps First Avenger: Captain America for a 2011 release.

Is it a red, white and blue risk? Or does the overseas popularity of Barack Obama mean global audiences might be more willing to embrace a hero whose costume is modelled on the American flag?

"I think it would be foolish of us to forge ahead without considering that," acknowledges Marvel Studios' president of production Kevin Feige. "But the truth is, Captain America is really the story of Steve Rogers -- who is like Peter Parker or Bruce Banner or Tony Stark, who, by the way, is about as jingoistic guy as there is. (Stark's) constantly talking about America, what's right for America, making weapons to go to war with the rest of the world with, and (Iron Man) did extremely well overseas and that's because the story is engaging."

Production begins in June. Still undecided is who will wield the shield. Feige says a casting announcement could come as early as October. Joe Johnston (Jurassic Park III, The Rocketeer) is directing.

MOON SHOT: Sam Rockwell is in orbit over the success of his cerebral science-fiction sleeper, Moon.

"It's phenomenal. It's amazing. It's a dream come true," he says.

"I didn't know if it would last a week or two, but it's still going strong. I'm very proud of it."

So much so he's set to reunite with director Duncan Jones -- possibly as his character from Moon -- in the filmmaker's next movie. "I think so," Rockwell confirms. "It's a cameo."

One reunion Rockwell doubts will happen is a sequel to Galaxy Quest, the well-liked Star Trek spoof that celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.

"People love that movie. I don't know if it made enough money to do a sequel. It would kind of be silly at this point."
