The Sandman is a dark graphic novel series that was first published in 1989 and went on until the mid 90's. 

The series follows Dream aka Morpheus, one of the 7 Endless, as he is captured and learns about the inevitability of change. Critically acclaimed, The Sandman was one of the first few graphic novels ever to be on The New York Times Best Seller list along with the Watchmen and the Dark Knight Returns. It's covers as you can see are haunting showing off the eerie mythological stories within.
