It's been a while since our last post but I wanted to write a short commemorative post about Sal Buscema, one of the comic book artist legends that helped fuel Marvels raging success through the silver age onwards and has inspired so many people ever since.
He stepped into the comic book world by inking his older brother John Buscema's pages in the early 60's but by 1968 he worked he was working full-time and became such a beloved part of the team he earned the name 'Our Pal Sal' that can still be seen in the comics he worked on. Growing in confidence, Sal helped shape some of the most famous characters in marvel history including Rom, Spectacular Spider-Man, The Defenders, New Mutants and most famous of all for working on The Incredible Hulk series for 10 years through the bronze age.
He has helped create characters through to the present day and has justly won the Inkpot Award back in 2003, the Hero Initiative Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013 and more recently in 2021 he received the Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame Award from the Inkwell Awards.
Our CEO Steve used to read his comics as a child and wanted to say a few words:

"OUR PAL SAL. RIP
As a kid I was always into Superteams rather than single heroes, I felt you got more bang for your bucks. In fact my passion for comics started when reading The Avengers UK reprints in the early 1970s. Imagine my delight then when I discovered a new super team, The Defenders, more powerful, I would argue, than even the Avengers.
That’s when I became hooked of the artwork of the peerless Sal Buscema and even today I’m on the lookout for pages of original art for my personal collection from his run on Defenders.
Classic art from one of the titans of comic book illustration.
Godspeed for your onward journey to that Bullpen in the sky."
